The idea

Radio tools can make the spectrum difficult for newcomers to explore. RF Commons develops an approachable workbench for tuning, signal learning, bookmarks and logs, with a local receive-only audio bridge.

How it works

A dependency-free browser interface provides a synthetic waterfall, tuner controls, bookmarks, logs and learning surfaces. A local Node helper offers receiver health checks and receive-only audio through rtl_fm and FFmpeg.

What’s implemented

  • Synthetic spectrum/waterfall and signal-learning UI
  • Frequency bookmarks and a local logbook
  • Local RTL-SDR audio bridge with explicit missing-tool/device states
  • Public receiver directory/map interface

PROJECT STATUS / RADIO PROTOTYPE

Where it stands

Radio-workbench prototype

  • The waterfall is synthetic, not live receiver IQ
  • No completed real FFT/waterfall pipeline or gain calibration
  • A front-end prototype; listed product modes partly describe its roadmap
